BIA MUO NSO by Peter Egbo — Lyrics
About BIA MUO NSO
This is a solemn and deeply moving Igbo setting of the *Veni Sancte Spiritus* (the Golden Sequence), the ancient prayer to the Holy Spirit sung on Pentecost Sunday. The text calls upon the Holy Spirit to come down from heaven, bringing light, comfort, and healing to the faithful.
Choirs typically sing this piece during the Pentecost sequence, just before the Gospel acclamation, or as a prayerful meditation during the season of the Holy Spirit. The arrangement is structured into eight distinct sections, each reflecting a different stanza of the traditional sequence. It moves through different voice parts taking the lead—from the sopranos calling on the "Father of the poor" (Nna ndị ogbenye) to the tenors and basses asking for rest in the heat and comfort in sorrow.
The music captures the profound longing of the church for the Spirit's presence. By breaking the prayer into these distinct choral sections, the composer allows the choir to dwell on each specific petition—asking the Spirit to wash away sin, water the dry heart, and melt the frozen will.
