About Ave verum corpus
Ottavio Catalani composed this motet for SSATB, AATTB voices. The Latin text is a well-known eucharistic devotion, often sung during Mass. It meditates on the real body of Christ, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was sacrificed on the cross for humanity. The lyrics reflect on the pierced side from which flowed water and blood, and implore Jesus for mercy in the hour of death. The devotional aspect of the text is deeply expressed through the rich, extended vocal scoring, making it a moving contemplation of Christ's sacrifice and the Eucharist.
