About Ave verum corpus
The familiar Latin text of Ave verum corpus is given heartfelt expression in this SATB motet. The words reflect on the true body of Jesus, born of the Virgin Mary, who suffered and was sacrificed on the cross for humanity. The text then invokes the flow of water and blood from his pierced side, and asks that this sacred offering be a foretaste for us in the hour of death. Drake's setting captures the devotional spirit of this Marian antiphon, with its plea for mercy and its ultimate affirmation of Jesus's divine nature as the Son of Mary. This motet offers a profound meditation on the Eucharist and the Passion, suitable for sacred occasions.
