About Ave verum
Josquin des Prez’s Ave verum is a profound and moving setting of the eucharistic text. The music opens with a gentle tenderness, the three voices of soprano, alto, and tenor weaving a devotional atmosphere. The composer explores the text’s central themes – Christ’s real presence in the sacrament, his sacrifice on the cross, and the outpouring of blood and water from his side – with a clarity and directness that is deeply affecting. The short, syllabic setting of the opening phrases gives way to more expansive melodic lines as the prayer progresses. The final plea for mercy, Miserere mei, Amen, provides a quiet and heartfelt conclusion to this sacred motet.
