About Ave Regina caelorum
This setting of the Marian antiphon Ave Regina caelorum opens with a direct address to the Queen of Heaven and Lady of the Angels, followed by salutations to her as the 'root' and 'gate' from which the world's light has sprung. The composer Scott Villard explores the rich imagery of the text in this SATB motet. The second half rejoices in the glorious Virgin, who surpasses all in beauty, before bidding her farewell and beseeching her to pray for us to Christ. The Latin text provides a profound devotional focus, while the four-part voicing offers a full and resonant sound ideal for sacred occasions.
