Ascendit Deus by Peter Philips — Lyrics
About Ascendit Deus
Peter Philips’s jubilant motet, Ascendit Deus, for SSATB voices, celebrates the Ascension with music of great energy and brilliance. The Latin text, taken from the Psalms, speaks of God ascending with jubilation and the sound of the trumpet, bestowing gifts upon humankind and preparing his throne in heaven. Philips’s setting reflects this divine exultation through soaring melodic lines and rich, imitative textures. The five-part writing allows for thrilling contrasts and powerful climaxes, particularly in the Alleluia sections. This piece is a superb example of late Renaissance sacred polyphony, offering both technical challenge and profound expressive depth for an accomplished choir. Its dramatic unfolding and joyful spirit make it a magnificent choice for liturgical or concert occasions.
