Ascendit Deus

The jubilant opening of Ascendit Deus immediately captures the text's sense of divine ascension. Giovanni Francesco Anerio's setting for two voices, ST, moves with a bright, energetic clarity. The composer crafts a polyphonic texture where the voices entwine, mirroring the text's message of God ascending with great sound and bestowing gifts upon humanity. The Latin text, taken from Psalm 47, speaks of God's joyful ascent and the establishment of His heavenly throne, a solemn yet triumphant declaration. This is a potent and concise setting, perfect for liturgical occasions that call for a direct and uplifting musical expression of divine glory and power.
