Angelus Domini by Gregor Aichinger — Lyrics
About Angelus Domini
This devotional motet for two-part choir (soprano and bass) sets a Latin text recounting the Annunciation. Gregor Aichinger’s setting vividly portrays the angel’s message to Mary and her humble acceptance, “Behold the handmaid of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.” It continues with the miraculous conception and the incarnation, “And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us.” Aichinger’s music, typical of sacred motets of his era, is characterised by its clear harmonic language and flowing melodic lines, making it suitable for services during Advent and Christmastide, or as a contemplative piece at any time of year.
