STAY WITH ME

"Stay With Me" is a meditative chant that draws its text directly from the Gospel of Matthew, capturing Christ’s words to his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane. Composed by Jacques Berthier for the Taizé community, it is designed to be sung as an ostinato—a short, repeating refrain that invites the choir and congregation into a space of quiet, continuous prayer.

In our parishes, this piece is a profound choice for Holy Thursday during the transfer of the Eucharist to the Altar of Repose, or for Lenten retreats and Holy Hour adorations. The main choir holds the steady, comforting harmony of the refrain, singing "Stay with me, remain here with me," while a cantor or soloists layer the scriptural verses over the top.

The arrangement builds a deeply moving atmosphere through its simplicity. As the solo verses progress through Jesus's agonizing prayer—from "The spirit is eager, but the flesh is weak" to his final surrender, "your will be done"—the unwavering repetition of the chorus anchors the meditation, helping everyone present to keep watch with the Lord.
