Since By Man Came Death

"Since By Man Came Death" is one of the most profound and dramatic choruses from G.F. Handel’s Messiah. In the Nigerian Catholic choir loft, this classical work is frequently sung during the Easter season to celebrate the Resurrection, as well as at solemn funerals to remind the congregation of the promise of eternal life. The text, drawn from Corinthians, speaks directly to the Christian mystery of mortality and redemption.

The musical arrangement is striking in its contrasts. It opens with a grave, slow quartet singing "Since by man came death," reflecting the solemnity of human mortality. This quiet reverence is suddenly broken by an explosive, joyful allegro chorus declaring, "By man came also the resurrection of the dead."
