PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

“Prayer of the Faithful” by Ezeigwe Chidi is a gentle, pleading response sung during the Universal Prayer at Mass. When the lector finishes an intercession, the choir and congregation unite in this beautiful Igbo refrain, calling on the “Good God” (Ezi Chukwu) to come and answer the prayers of His children. The melody is simple and reverent, creating a quiet space for the community to lay their needs before the Lord.

What makes this particular setting special is its built-in versatility. Alongside the general verse calling on the Creator (Chukwu onye okike), the composer includes a dedicated verse specifically for the dead. Singing “Meghere h'ụzọ Chineke biko” (God, please open the way for them), the choir lifts up the souls of the faithful departed. This thoughtful addition makes the piece a wonderful choice for Requiem Masses, funerals, or All Souls' Day, allowing the liturgy to flow naturally without needing to switch to a different response.
