OYALA KO WOICHO by Sir Adejoh John — Lyrics
About OYALA KO WOICHO
"Oyala Ko Woicho" is a deeply rhythmic and reverent setting of the Agnus Dei, composed in the Idoma language by Sir Adejo A. John. Written entirely in solfa notation, this piece captures the solemn yet hopeful plea of the "Lamb of God" as the congregation prepares for Communion. The composer dedicates the work to "Our Lady Mediatrix of All Graces, Our Lady Queen of Aokpe, Benue State," rooting the music firmly in the local Catholic devotion of the region.
In the choir loft, this setting shines through its steady, layered repetitions. The sopranos lead the gentle, persistent calls of "O yala eh," building into the full invocation of "O yala kowoicho" (Lamb of God). The rhythmic pulse of the syllables creates a natural, swaying momentum that feels both traditional and deeply prayerful. As the piece moves toward its conclusion, the repeated pleas for mercy and peace ("che nya hu ondu je, me nyiyi jebo lo") settle into a quiet, lingering finish, preparing the hearts of the faithful to approach the altar.
