OTITO DIRI CHINEKE by ADAWAI JAMES — Lyrics
About OTITO DIRI CHINEKE
When the choir launches into "Otito Diri Chineke," the entire atmosphere of the Mass shifts. This piece is a vibrant Igbo setting of the Gloria, the great hymn of praise that rings out after the Penitential Rite. Adawai James has crafted a melody that captures the sheer joy of the angels' song at Bethlehem, inviting the congregation to join in declaring glory to God in the highest and peace to His people on earth.
The structure follows the traditional liturgical text beautifully. After the joyful refrain, the verses walk us through the ancient acclamations: praising, blessing, and adoring the Father ("Anyị aja Gị mma, anyị agọzie Gị"). As we move into the later verses, the tone naturally shifts to a more pleading, reverent call to the Lamb of God ("Nwaturu nke Chineke") to have mercy on us and receive our prayers, before rising again to the triumphant final declaration of Christ's holiness alongside the Holy Spirit.
For a choir, singing this Gloria is a chance to lead the parish in full-throated worship. The solfa notation makes it accessible, but it is the rhythmic energy of the Igbo language that truly brings the piece to life. It is a perfect choice for festive Sunday Masses, feast days, and any celebration where the liturgy calls for a profound and uplifting expression of thanksgiving.
