OTITO DIRI CHINEKE by Fr. Bart C. Ezeokafor — Lyrics
About OTITO DIRI CHINEKE
This score brings together two essential parts of the Mass in Igbo: the joyful Gloria ("Otito Diri Chineke") and the solemn Penitential Rite ("Onyenweanyi Mee Ebere"), both composed by Fr. Bart C. Ezeokafor.
The Gloria is arranged with a layered, engaging texture that brings the angelic hymn to life. After the full choir announces the opening praise, the piece settles into a unique call-and-response structure. The sopranos take the lead on the verses, singing the traditional text of the Gloria, while the other voice parts maintain a soft, continuous backing refrain ("O tito diri Chukwu n'elu kasi elu"). This creates a vibrant, rhythmic momentum that carries the congregation's praise upward without losing the clarity of the words.
Following the exuberance of the Gloria, the attached "Onyenweanyi Mee Ebere" provides a gentle, pleading setting for the Kyrie. Its simple, flowing lines allow the choir and congregation to enter deeply into the Penitential Rite, asking for God's mercy with reverence and humility before the Liturgy of the Word begins.
