Odogwu by Edwin A. Adomhokhai — Lyrics
About Odogwu
"Odogwu" (The Mighty One) is a majestic Igbo choral anthem composed by Adomhokhai Edwin A. Written as a dedicated motet for the St. Cecilia Choir, it opens with a stirring, ad-libbed male voice solo that cries out to God, acknowledging His supreme power and seeking His salvation. The choir then bursts into a vibrant, rhythmic proclamation in the Andante section ("Kwupụta na mba niile" — Proclaim to all nations), declaring the majesty of the Lord and offering a resounding Gloria to the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
As the piece builds into its lively Allegretto movement, the voices weave together in joyful, overlapping praises, calling God "Odogwu" and "Ikenga" (titles of immense strength and valor). This complex, through-composed anthem is perfect for grand celebrations, choral concerts, or special thanksgiving moments in the liturgy. Choirs love it for its dynamic shifts—from the solemn, prayerful opening to the triumphant, high-energy climax that leaves the congregation in awe of God's might.
