About ODIDI

"Odidi" is a profoundly moving Igbo funeral anthem that speaks directly to the heartbreak of losing a loved one. The title translates to "Patience" or "Endurance," and the song is a heartfelt plea to God for the fortitude to bear the heavy sorrow of death. The lyrics acknowledge a difficult truth: while we know death is a passage to eternal life, the physical and emotional pain it leaves behind is meant for the living.

In the choir loft, this piece requires deep empathy and a gentle, expressive delivery. The verses build a prayerful petition, reminding God of His own Son's death on the cross as we ask for the strength to keep going. The chorus then shifts to a tender, tearful farewell to a dear friend, singing "naa n'udo" (rest in peace) and "jee nke ọma" (farewell).

Singing "Odidi" offers a moment of profound catharsis during a burial Mass or memorial service. It gives voice to the grief of the congregation while anchoring their sorrow in faith, reminding everyone that the best thing we can do for the departed is to remember them and find the strength to speak.
