NWA ATURU CHINEKE

When we reach the breaking of the bread, the mood in the church shifts to one of quiet reverence. "Nwa Aturu Chineke," composed by Johnpaul Chukwujekwu Okoye, captures this exact feeling. It is a reverent setting of the Agnus Dei in Igbo, designed to draw both the choir and the congregation into a deep, unified prayer.

The melody carries a gentle, rhythmic sway that feels very natural to sing. As the voices layer the repeated pleas for mercy, the harmony builds a sense of earnest petition. By the time the choir reaches the third invocation, the music shifts seamlessly into asking the Lord to grant us peace before we approach the altar for Communion.

Because the solfa notation is so clear and direct, this piece is a joy to teach during rehearsals. The parts move together in a way that supports the text without overwhelming it, allowing the simple, profound words of the Lamb of God to remain the true focus of the moment.
