NGOZI by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About NGOZI
"Ngozi" is a vibrant Igbo thanksgiving song that celebrates the countless blessings God pours into our lives. From the very first line acknowledging the free air we breathe ("Ikuku i nyere m o"), the piece unfolds as a joyful litany of gratitude. The verses beautifully capture the everyday miracles we often take for granted—the rain from heaven, the sun and moon that light our way, the gift of peaceful sleep, and the blessings of family and provision.
During Mass, this piece is a natural choice for the Offertory procession or during special thanksgiving celebrations. Its lively rhythm and engaging vocal parts invite the whole church into a spirit of praise. As the choir sings of God's blessings surrounding us completely ("Ngozi Gi Chineke m o gbaram gburugburu"), it resonates deeply with the congregation, reminding everyone that all we have is a gift from above.
A beautiful detail found on the final page of the score reveals that Jude Nnam dedicated this piece to his wife, Lady Jane Ngozi Nnam, noting that she inspired such great melodies in his heart. Singing "Ngozi" requires a joyful energy from the choir, building a sense of communal gratitude that is perfect for feast days, harvest thanksgivings, or any Sunday where the community gathers to say a profound "thank you" to God.
