BIA MMUO NSO (EKPERE MAKA ONYINYE ASAA) by Azuine-Uche Bruno — Lyrics
About BIA MMUO NSO (EKPERE MAKA ONYINYE ASAA)
"Bịa Mmụọ Nsọ (Ekpere Maka Onyinye Asaa)" is an earnest Igbo choral prayer calling on the Holy Spirit to bestow His seven sacred gifts. The subtitle translates to "Prayer for the Seven Gifts," and the composer carefully weaves each of these graces into the lyrics. Across the three verses, the choir petitions for Amamihe (Wisdom), Ndụmọdụ (Counsel), Nghọta (Understanding), Ọmụma (Knowledge), Egwu Chukwu (Fear of the Lord), Ike (Fortitude), and Nsọpụrụ (Piety).
Choirs naturally turn to this piece for Pentecost Sunday, Confirmation Masses, or any liturgy focused on spiritual renewal. The text asks the Spirit to dwell in the hearts of the faithful, kindle the fire of God's love, and renew the face of the earth. Because the music is through-composed rather than a simple repeating hymn, each verse receives its own distinct harmonic treatment to match the specific gifts being requested.
Sung with the lively but prayerful energy marked by its Con Spirito tempo, the arrangement draws the congregation into a deep moment of petition. As the final verse asks the Spirit to help us become true children of God ("ezi ụmụ nke Chukwu"), the voices unite in a gentle, lingering close.
