KYRIE

Charles Okafor’s "Kyrie" is a solemn and heartfelt setting of the traditional Penitential Rite. Written entirely in solfa notation, the piece carries a clear directive from the composer at the bottom of the page: "Sing it like someone really seeking for Mercy. Allow it to flow through you." This instruction sets the exact tone required for the choir loft—a moment of genuine vulnerability before the Mass proceeds.

The structure follows the classic Greek threefold petition: Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy, Lord have mercy. The four-part harmony moves with a grave, measured tempo, allowing the congregation to reflect on their need for grace. It is a fitting choice for the beginning of the liturgy, especially during seasons like Lent or any Sunday where a deeply reflective opening is desired.
