Kyrie by George Fredrick Handel — Lyrics
About Kyrie
This setting of the Kyrie is by George Frideric Handel, a composer of immense renown whose prolific output spans opera, oratorio, and sacred music. The text, "Kyrie eleison" (Lord, have mercy), "Christe eleison" (Christ, have mercy), "Kyrie eleison" (Lord, have mercy), is the opening plea of the Ordinary of the Mass. Handel sets this traditional Greek text for SATB choir. As one of the foundational movements of the Mass, the Kyrie offers composers an opportunity to establish the liturgical and musical tone for the work. Handel's setting, typical of his grand and devotional style, provides a powerful and reflective setting of this ancient prayer.
