KAN GICIYE by Josiah Innocent — Lyrics
About KAN GICIYE
"Kan Giciye" brings a deeply moving Hausa text of salvation and sets it to one of the most recognizable melodies in the world—the stirring tune of the South African anthem, "Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika." For a choir, singing this familiar, sweeping harmony with words focused on the cross creates an immediate sense of reverence in the church. The arrangement by Josiah Innocent uses the natural gravity of the tune to carry a message of redemption and grace.
The verses walk the congregation through a journey from living in sin and fearing death to finding the boundless mercy of Jesus. When the choir reaches the refrain, the parts trade off beautifully. The upper voices sing of the Savior's mercy ("Jinkan Yesu") and the work of forgiveness, while the lower voices echo beneath them. It is a powerful piece for Lent, Holy Week, or any Sunday where the Mass focuses on repentance and the sacrifice made on the cross.
