About Kaàbọ
"Kaàbọ" is a majestic Yoruba Christmas motet that bursts with the joy of the Nativity. The title translates to a warm, celebratory "Welcome," setting the tone for a piece that invites the newborn King into the world. The lyrics open with the awe of seeing the star of glory ("A ti ri irawọ ogo") and quickly transition into a vibrant celebration of Emmanuel, the King of Kings and Savior of humanity.
Written for a full choir and a rich ensemble of traditional Yoruba percussion—including the shekere, gangan (talking drum), and akuba—the arrangement is highly rhythmic and festive. The music moves through dynamic choral passages into expressive solo sections. A reflective Baritone solo ponders humanity's need for salvation, which is beautifully answered by a soaring Tenor solo that praises the eternal, unfailing love of the Messiah.
Choirs often bring this piece to life during Christmas concerts and festive seasonal Masses. The combination of classical choral harmony with indigenous Nigerian instrumentation makes it a thrilling experience for both the singers and the congregation, perfectly capturing the triumphant gladness of Christ's birth.
