JERUSALEM ULO NDOKWA NO. 1 by Harry Wilson — Lyrics
About JERUSALEM ULO NDOKWA NO. 1
This collection brings together essential Igbo Catholic funeral chants, guiding a departed soul from earthly struggles to eternal rest. The opening hymn, "Jerusalem Ụlọ Ndokwa," is set to the familiar hymn tune Martyrdom by Hugh Wilson. Its verses reflect honestly on the sorrows and fleeting nature of life in this world, while lifting the singers' eyes toward the joy, peace, and eternal reward waiting in the heavenly city.
Following the hymn are two vital liturgical responses used during the final commendation. "Ukwe Laa Mma" is an Igbo setting of the Subvenite, calling upon the saints and angels of God to come and receive the soul, presenting it before the Most High. The final section, "A Gaba I Buru Ozu Apụ N'ụlọ Ụka," translates the traditional In paradisum. Choirs sing this gentle, marching chant as the body is carried out of the church doors, praying that the martyrs will welcome the departed and lead them into the holy city of Jerusalem.
Together, these pieces provide a complete musical sequence for a Catholic burial. The use of clear solfa notation and vernacular text allows the choir and congregation to unite their voices in a deeply comforting prayer, asking Christ to receive the one He has called and grant them everlasting rest.
