Iyayi by Ezomo John O — Lyrics
About Iyayi
"Iyayi" is a sweeping, rhythmic Edo setting of the Nicene Creed, composed by Ezomo John. The title translates to "Faith" or "Belief," and the piece serves as a powerful profession of the Catholic faith during the Mass. Sung just after the homily, it allows the choir and congregation to stand together and declare the core mysteries of their belief in one unified voice.
The arrangement is structured to carry the extensive text of the Creed naturally and clearly. It opens with a bright, memorable chorus affirming belief in one God ("I y'Osanobua okpa yi"), before moving into stacked verses that walk through the ancient tenets of the faith. From the creation of the world to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the acknowledgment of the Holy Spirit and the Church, the Edo lyrics capture the gravity of the Creed.
As the final verse concludes the profession of faith, the piece transitions into a resonant, layered "Isẹẹ" (Amen) section. This repeated, harmonized "Isẹẹ o" acts as a joyful seal on the prayer, bringing the entire declaration to a confident and uplifting close. It is a deeply moving piece for Edo-speaking Catholic communities, turning a solemn recitation into a vibrant act of worship.
