Ihe Anuri

"Ihe Anuri" is a lively and jubilant Igbo Christmas carol that calls the choir and congregation to celebrate the great joy of the Nativity. The title translates to "Great Joy," perfectly capturing the mood of the season. From the very first notes, the song invites us to journey to Bethlehem and witness the birth of the Savior, born of the Virgin Mary.

The verses beautifully unfold the Christmas story. We sing of the prophecies fulfilled, the Wise Men arriving from the East with their gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh, and the heavenly host of angels singing "Glory to God in the highest." The recurring call of "k'anyi jee" (let us go) gives the piece a wonderful sense of movement, as if the choir is actively leading the faithful to the manger to adore the newborn King.

Composed by Azuine-Uche Bruno, this piece is a favorite for Christmas Masses and carol services. Its bright, rhythmic melody and rich SATB harmonies make it a joy to sing. When the choir reaches the final verse, echoing the angels' song of peace on earth to people of goodwill, it brings a profound sense of celebration to the liturgy.
