Hodie completi sunt

Luca Marenzio's Hodie completi sunt is a powerful SATB motet for unaccompanied voices, setting a Latin text from the Pentecost liturgy. The music vividly depicts the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the disciples, as described in the Acts of the Apostles. Marenzio captures the dramatic arrival of the Spirit, symbolized by fire, and the miraculous gift of tongues that enabled the apostles to preach the Gospel to all nations. The text's message of salvation for believers is underpinned by Marenzio's masterful South Italian polyphonic style, which imbues the sacred words with both intensity and devotion.
