About Hispanum ad coenam
Alexander Utendal's Hispanum ad coenam is a secular motet for SATTB choir, sung in Latin. The text tells a humorous story of a Belgian merchant hosting a Spanish guest. The merchant boasts of his lavish meal, fine wines, and exquisite tableware, expecting his guest to be impressed. However, the Spanish guest, unimpressed, slyly points out that the merchant drinks wine imported from Spain while the locals drink water, implying that this is why they lack wit and intelligence. The motet uses this anecdote to playfully contrast national characteristics and sophistication through its rich SATTB vocal textures.
