OBILIGO! by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About OBILIGO!
"Obiligo!" is a triumphant Easter anthem that rings out from the choir loft with the ultimate message of the Christian faith: Christ has conquered death. Written by Jude Nnam, the song captures the sheer joy and victory of Resurrection morning. The title itself, meaning "He has risen," sets the tone for a piece that moves from the sorrow of the Passion to the explosive celebration of Easter Sunday.
The verses take the congregation on a journey through the Paschal mystery. We hear the agony of Gethsemane, the crown of thorns, and the confusion of the women at the empty tomb, before the angel's glorious announcement that He has gone ahead to Galilee. By the final verse, the choir is boldly taunting death itself—"Ọnwụ olee ike gị?" (Death, where is your power?)—rejoicing that the stone has been rolled away and the ultimate battle is won.
For a Nigerian Catholic choir, this is the perfect piece for the Easter season, especially as an entrance or recessional hymn on Easter Sunday. Its energetic rhythm and powerful Igbo lyrics invite the whole church to join in the Alleluias, celebrating the risen Lord who has broken the chains of the grave.
