GLORIA (Missa Caritas) by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About GLORIA (Missa Caritas)
"Gloria (Missa Caritas)" is a vibrant, rhythmic setting of the Greater Doxology composed by Jude Nnam in 1999. Known for his ability to blend traditional Catholic liturgical texts with lively African choral idioms, Nnam delivers a piece that brings an immediate sense of festive joy to the Mass. The driving solfa notation and syncopated entries make it a favorite for Nigerian choirs during festive seasons.
As the Gloria, this piece is sung right after the Penitential Rite on Sundays (outside of Advent and Lent), solemnities, and major feast days. The Latin text is broken into four distinct verses, allowing the choir to proclaim the praises of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit with dynamic contrast before returning to the energetic "Gloria in excelsis Deo" refrain.
For the choir, the "Missa Caritas" Gloria is a thrilling sing. The overlapping vocal entries in the refrain build a wall of joyful sound, while the verses offer moments of harmonic richness and rhythmic precision. It lifts the congregation's spirit, perfectly capturing the angelic praise of Christmas morning and carrying that exultation into every celebratory Mass.
