GLORIA (MISSA CARITAS) by Jude Nnam — Lyrics
About GLORIA (MISSA CARITAS)
"Gloria (Missa Caritas)" by Jude Nnam is one of those settings that instantly lifts the spirit of the congregation. Written in 1993, it has become a familiar and beloved fixture in Nigerian Catholic parishes. The piece takes the ancient Latin text of the Greater Doxology and gives it a vibrant, rhythmic energy, making the "Gloria in excelsis Deo" ring out with genuine festive joy.
The structure is highly engaging for both the choir and the assembly. After the bright, repeating refrain, the verses—from "Et in terra pax" to the final "Quoniam tu solus Sanctus"—are carried by the voices in a way that feels both reverent and deeply celebratory. We typically bring this out on Sundays outside of Advent and Lent, as well as on major feast days, to truly elevate the Mass before the Liturgy of the Word begins.
Singing this Gloria feels like a true communal offering. The familiar solfa lines and the way the harmony parts weave together allow the choir loft to sing with absolute confidence. When we reach the final "Amen" and the returning "In excelsis Deo," it leaves a lingering sense of praise that prepares everyone perfectly for the readings.
