Gloria in Excelsis

Emma Atuanya’s "Gloria in Excelsis" is a vibrant, rhythmic setting of the traditional Latin Gloria, composed with the energy of a Nigerian Catholic youth choir in mind. The piece opens with a bright, repeating refrain of "Gloria in excelsis Deo" that is easy for singers to catch and hold onto, making it a wonderful choice for festive Masses and high liturgical seasons where the Gloria returns in full voice.

The verses follow the classic stacked-harmony format, carrying the choir through the ancient text—from the praise of "Et in terra pax" to the solemn petitions of the "Qui tollis" and the triumphant final "Cum sancto Spiritu." Because the verses are arranged to share the same melodic structure, choirs can focus on their diction and the rich, homophonic blend of the Latin words.

Written in solfa notation and dedicated to the Holy Trinity Catholic Youth Choir in Awaka, Owerri, this setting captures the spirit of local choir lofts.
