Gleich als der Hirsch by André Vierendeels — Lyrics
Gleich als der Hirsch zur Wasserquell,
wann er geschossen, eylet schnell:
also der lieben Vater Brunst,
von alters her rufft nicht umb sonst,
es woll doch kommen Jesus Christ,
der ihr, und unser Heyland ist;
Ihr Himmel rawet oben rab,
die längst von Gott versprochne Gab,
ihr Wolcken regnet allbereyt,
den Lehrer der Gerechtigkeit,
O Erden grüne thu dich auff,
damit ich zu mein Heyland lauff.

About Gleich als der Hirsch
This setting of a German sacred text for STB voices opens with a vivid image of a deer, driven by thirst, hurrying to a water source. This is used as a metaphor for the soul's ardent longing for Jesus Christ, who is presented as their saviour. The text continues with a plea for God to send the promised gift, the teacher of righteousness, urging heaven to rain it down and the earth to open up in readiness. The choir director will appreciate the direct emotional appeal and the clear, devotional message expressed through this rich, three-part texture.
