About Gaudeamus omnes
Peter Philips' Gaudeamus omnes is a substantial motet for double choir (SATB.SATB) in Latin. The text celebrates joy in the Lord, opening with a call to rejoice and keep a festive day. It then develops through various possible textual settings, referring to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, the solemnity of All Saints, the martyrdom of Saint Stephen, the passion of Saint Thomas, or the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. In each case, the choir proclaims that angels rejoice and archangels praise the Son of God. The music, for two choirs, allows for antiphonal effects and rich, complex textures, offering directors a powerful and celebratory work appropriate for feast days.
