Gabriel's Message by Geoff Allan — Lyrics
The Angel Gabriel from heaven came
His wings as drifted snow, his eyes as flame
"All hail" said he thou lowly Maiden Mary
Most highly favoured lady Gloria.
For known a blessed mother thou shalt be
All generations laud and honor thee

About Gabriel's Message
Geoff Allan's setting of Gabriel's Message for SSATB voices opens with a direct and striking musical depiction of the Annunciation. The composer captures the celestial messenger's appearance and the profound message delivered to Mary with rich harmonic language and a clear sense of narrative. The text, a familiar Christmas carol, recounts the angel's salutation and Mary's humble acceptance, leading to the joyful acclamation 'Gloria'. Allan's arrangement for double choir (SATB and SATB, with optional divisi) offers opportunities for dramatic contrast and expansive sound, making it a compelling choice for concert or seasonal occasions. The English lyrics provide a clear, accessible devotional focus.
