GABRIEL'S MESSAGE by Edgar Pettman — Lyrics
About GABRIEL'S MESSAGE
When we prepare for the Christmas season, "Gabriel's Message" is one of those carols that instantly sets a mood of quiet awe. It tells the story of the Annunciation, painting a vivid picture of the Angel Gabriel descending with wings like drifted snow and eyes like flame. The verses carry a gentle, almost mysterious walking pace as the dialogue unfolds between the angel and the lowly maiden, Mary.
For a choir, the beauty of this piece lies in its storytelling. Each verse builds the narrative, from the angel's greeting to Mary's humble acceptance, and finally to the birth of Emmanuel. The melody is rooted in a traditional Basque folk tune, giving it a distinct, ancient feel that contrasts wonderfully with the more common, triumphant Christmas hymns we sing.
We often bring this out during Advent or for Marian feasts, right up until the Christmas vigil. The arrangement requires careful attention to the phrasing so the words flow naturally. Then, at the end of every verse, the quiet tension releases into a bright, joyful "Gloria!"—a wonderful moment for the voices to open up and ring through the church.
