Gabriel Angelus by Giovanni Francesco Anerio — Lyrics
About Gabriel Angelus
Giovanni Francesco Anerio was an Italian composer of the late Renaissance and early Baroque periods. His motet Gabriel Angelus is a setting of the Annunciation text from the Gospel of Luke. The choir is divided into five parts: two sopranos, alto, tenor, and bass (SSATB). The Latin text, spoken by the Archangel Gabriel to Mary, proclaims 'Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women.' Anerio's music likely reflects the polychoral traditions of his time, creating a rich and resonant sound appropriate for sacred services. This motet offers a compelling opportunity to explore early Baroque polyphony with its vibrant textures and expressive harmonic language.
