JESU NA - AGBAGO by ADAWAI JAMES — Lyrics
About JESU NA - AGBAGO
"Jesu Na - Agbago" (Jesus is Ascending) is a joyful and rhythmic Igbo choral piece that captures the triumph of the Ascension. Drawing directly from the biblical account in the Acts of the Apostles, the song opens with the angels' famous question to the disciples: "Ọ gịnị k'unu n'enel'anya n'igwe?" (Why are you looking up to heaven?). The choir then answers with a declaration of faith, proclaiming that Jesus, who conquered death and wore the crown of thorns, is now taking His place beside the Father.
In the choir loft, this piece shines during the feast of the Ascension or the final weeks of the Easter season. The arrangement uses an engaging call-and-response structure, with the voices weaving together to reassure the congregation ("Nwa Chineke, atụl'ụjọ" — Child of God, do not fear). It reminds the faithful that the same Christ who ascends in glory will one day return to the world. The lively tempo and uplifting harmonies make it a perfect recessional or thanksgiving hymn, sending the congregation forth with a spirit of hope and anticipation.
