1. Come, all ye people of my nation,
Attend a while and I'll relate
The wonders of my sad condition,
And how I left that wretched state.
2. I was born blind, to sin inclined,
As all descendants of Adam are,
Full sixteen years I was delighted
With social mirth, and void of fear.
3. I once, unthoughtful, went to meeting,
And heard a woman relating there
The travail of her sad condition,
And how she came the Lord to fear.
4. I saw, while she was thus relating,
The awful state that I was in,
I saw my soul was unconverted,
And always had been dead in sin.
