Ego dormio by Jens Klimek — Lyrics

Ego dormio, et cor meum vigilat: vox dilecti mei pulsantis, Aperi mihi, soror mea, [sponsa,] amica mea, columba mea, [formosa mea, speciosa mea,] immaculata mea. Quia caput meum plenum est rore, et cincinni mei guttis noctium. Aperui dilecto meo pessulum ostii mei [at ille totus desiderabilis clamans ad me]

About Ego dormio

Jens Klimek's Ego dormio is a setting for three-part women's voices (SSA) of a Latin text taken from the Song of Songs. This secular motet draws on imagery of longing and union, with the beloved knocking at the door and the speaker's heart awake while she sleeps. The composer uses the expressive potential of the female voices to convey the tenderness and fervent desire expressed in the text, with the words speaking of love strong as death and beauty that enthralls. Klimek's setting allows the choir to explore a rich palette of vocal colour and dynamic shading, bringing this ancient text to life with a contemporary sensibility.
