Ego dormio by Ignazio Donati — Lyrics

Ego dormio, et cor meum vigilat: vox dilecti mei pulsantis, Aperi mihi, soror mea, [sponsa,] amica mea, columba mea, [formosa mea, speciosa mea,] immaculata mea. Quia caput meum plenum est rore, et cincinni mei guttis noctium. Aperui dilecto meo pessulum ostii mei [at ille totus desiderabilis clamans ad me]

About Ego dormio

This setting of the Song of Songs text opens with the bride speaking of her heart being awake while she sleeps, her beloved knocking. She responds to his call, opening the door to him. The composer Ignazio Donati captures the intimate dialogue between the bride and bridegroom. The sacred Latin text, drawn from the Vulgate, speaks of ardent love, comparing it to a seal upon the heart. The bridegroom praises her beauty, calling her immaculate and comparing her lips and speech to fine adornments. This motet for solo voice offers a tender and devotional reflection on the mystical union.
