About EASTER SUNDAY SEQUENCE
The "Easter Sunday Sequence" is a majestic setting of the *Victimae Paschali Laudes*, the ancient chant sung just before the Gospel Acclamation on Easter morning. This arrangement presents the text in both English and Latin, allowing choirs to proclaim the resurrection narrative in either language. It captures the awe and triumph of Easter, beginning with a call for Christians to offer their thankful praises to the Paschal Lamb.
As the piece unfolds, the choir narrates the stupendous combat where "death and life have contended," before shifting into a dramatic dialogue with Mary Magdalene. We ask her what she saw on her way, and she recounts the empty tomb, the bright angels, and the shroud left behind. It is a deeply moving moment in the Easter liturgy that brings the congregation right to the edge of the empty tomb.
The sequence builds to a powerful, joyful conclusion, affirming that Christ is indeed risen from the dead. With its final plea to the "Victor King" for mercy, followed by a resounding Amen and Alleluia, this piece perfectly sets the stage for the reading of the Resurrection Gospel.
