Dixit Dominus by Johann Melchior Caesar — Lyrics
Psalmus David. Dixit Dominus Domino meo: sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos
scabellum pedum tuorum.
Virgam virtutis tuae emittet Dominus ex Sion: dominare in medio
inimicorum tuorum.
Tecum principium in die virtutis tuae in splendoribus sanctorum:
ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te.

About Dixit Dominus
This setting of Psalm 109 (110) by Johann Melchior Caesar would have been sung as part of Vespers. The text, a Messianic psalm, proclaims God's promise to his Anointed, granting him dominion and eternal priesthood. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic interplay as the music unfolds the psalm's majestic pronouncements. Caesar's composition likely reflects the Baroque era's grandeur and dramatic expression, offering a powerful musical setting for these significant liturgical words. It is well-suited for a choir looking for substantial sacred repertoire for a formal service.
