About Dixit Dominus
Often sung during Vespers services, Isabella Leonarda's Dixit Dominus is a powerful setting of Psalm 109. This sacred motet for SATB choir in Latin draws on the full range of the text, from the declaration of God's power and the subjugation of enemies to the eternal priesthood. Leonarda's musical setting, characteristic of Baroque sacred music, would have been crafted for devotional occasions within religious communities. The demanding vocal lines and rich harmonic language would have showcased the skills of trained singers, bringing the grandeur and authority of the psalm to life.
