Dixit Dominus by Maurizio Cazzati — Lyrics
Psalmus David. Dixit Dominus Domino meo: sede a dextris meis, donec ponam inimicos tuos
scabellum pedum tuorum.
Virgam virtutis tuae emittet Dominus ex Sion: dominare in medio
inimicorum tuorum.
Tecum principium in die virtutis tuae in splendoribus sanctorum:
ex utero, ante luciferum, genui te.

About Dixit Dominus
This setting of Psalm 109, Dixit Dominus, presents the text with power and grandeur. The psalm's martial imagery of God granting victory to his anointed king is vividly conveyed in Cazzati's music. The SATB voicing allows for rich harmonic possibilities, supporting the text's declarations of divine authority and eternal priesthood. Cazzati's skill in setting sacred texts is evident here, creating a dramatic and compelling rendition of this significant Vesper Psalm. The Latin text, a cornerstone of liturgical music, is treated with both reverence and a sense of triumphant proclamation, making it a powerful choice for a choral programme.
