Deus in adiutorium

Sung during seasons of penitence, Deus in adiutorium draws on the opening versicle of the Office of Lauds. It sets the Latin text of Psalm 69:2, "O God, make speed to save me; O Lord, make haste to help me," before moving to the Gloria Patri. The composer Costanzo Antegnati provides this for double choir, SATB.SATB, creating a rich, antiphonal texture. The text concludes with the traditional "Alleluia," but the composer notes that during Septuagesima and Lent, the "Alleluia" should be replaced by "Laus tibi Domine Rex aeternae gloriae" – "Praise to you, O Lord, King of eternal glory." This is a substantial and resplendent setting of well-loved liturgical Latin.
