CREDO (Latin)

Jude Nnam’s setting of the Nicene Creed takes the ancient Latin profession of faith and gives it a rhythmic, responsorial structure that works beautifully for Nigerian choirs. Instead of a continuous, through-composed chant, the choir and congregation can anchor themselves on the powerful, repeating refrain, "Patrem Omnipotentem, factorem caeli et terrae." This approach transforms a lengthy recitation into an active, uplifting dialogue between the choir and the pews.

The verses walk steadily through the core mysteries of the Catholic faith—from the incarnation ("Et incarnatus est de Spiritu Sancto") to the resurrection and the procession of the Holy Spirit. Breaking the long text into distinct verses with a returning refrain keeps the assembly engaged and makes the Latin words much easier to learn and sing.
