Come, Holy Ghost by Thomas Attwood — Lyrics

About Come, Holy Ghost

This setting of the ancient Veni Creator Spiritus text by Thomas Attwood is for SATB choir. The Latin text is a powerful invocation of the Holy Spirit, traditionally used at Pentecost and for ordinations. It asks the Spirit to visit the minds and hearts of believers, to fill them with divine grace, and to grant wisdom and strength. The text also pleads for protection against enemies and for a deeper knowledge of the Father and the Son, concluding with a doxology. Attwood's music would likely reflect the solemnity and fervent prayer of this significant liturgical text, fitting within the tradition of verse anthems and office hymns.
