Canticum Simeonis by Józef Elsner — Lyrics
Nunc dimittis servum tuum, Domine, secundum verbum tuum in pace:
Quia viderunt oculi mei salutare tuum
Quod parasti ante faciem omnium populorum:
Lumen ad revelationem gentium, et gloriam plebis tuae Israel.

About Canticum Simeonis
The words of this motet are drawn from the Nunc Dimittis, the Song of Simeon, a biblical canticle of profound peace and fulfillment. Simeon, seeing the infant Jesus, recognizes him as the salvation prepared for all nations, a light for revelation and the glory of Israel. This is followed by the traditional Gloria Patri. Józef Elsner sets this deeply spiritual Latin text for SATTB choir. It is a fine example of sacred motet writing, suitable for liturgical use or concert programming.
