Sequence of the Mass of Pentecost

When Pentecost Sunday arrives, the liturgy gives us a rare and solemn moment right before the Gospel: the Sequence. PPO Egbo’s setting of "Bia Muo Nso" takes the ancient *Veni Sancte Spiritus* and brings it to life in Igbo, offering a deeply felt prayer for the Holy Spirit's descent.

The arrangement is wonderfully structured to feature the different voices in the choir loft. It opens with a unified call before passing the verses around. The sopranos cry out to the "Father of the poor" (Nna ndi ogbenye), the tenors sing of the ultimate Comforter, and the basses ground the prayer, asking for rest in our labor and shade in the heat. As the verses progress, the voices come together to ask for healing, guidance, and the cleansing of our sins, culminating in a joyful "Amen, Alleluia."

Right after the Sequence concludes, the score flows directly into the Pentecost Gospel Acclamation. Singing "Bia Muo nso nojuo n'obi ndi kwerenu" (Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful), the choir leads the congregation straight into the reading of the Word. It is a complete, moving package for one of the most important feast days of the church year.
